The main elements of frequency control devices include Quartz Crystals, Quartz Oscillators and Filters.

Just about every appliance and mobile wireless device from mobile phones to remote controlled toys and games have quartz crystals manufactured into them for precise timing and frequency control.

Typical Applications include:

Security cameras

Radio transmitters

Cellphones

Gps systems

Sensors

Pc disk drives

Pcs

Crystal Production

Crystal manufacturing occurs in two stages, optical and electrical:

Optical

Crystal production starts with the selection of quartz crystal blanks of the appropriate thickness and cut orientation from a comprehensive library of quartz crystal blanks. Subsequent processes include lapping, polishing and contouring operations to generate quartz crystal blanks with precisely specified dimensions, form, orientation and surface finish to guarantee the exact electrical properties of the finished items.

Electrical

The optical stages of production are followed by electrical processes including etching and cleaning, vacuum deposition of gold or silver electrodes, mounting and bonding, adjustment to ultimate frequency, encapsulation, marking and final quality assurance inspection.

Oscillator Production

Oscillator units are manufactured using both thick film hybrid substrates and printed circuit board approaches. Depending upon the application, the oscillator crystal can be incorporated as an independently sealed unit or as an un-encapsulated crystal blank. With the latter circumstance, the blank is mounted straight onto the oscillator substrate and the completed assembly is altered to final frequency prior to hermetic sealing. Products produced by an crystal oscillator department typically includes standard CMOS/TTL oscillators, ECL/PECL output oscillators, Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators (VCXOs), Temperature Controlled Crystal Oscillators(TCXOs), and Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillators (OCXOs), these latter elements needing a considerable input by engineering and quality assurance departments.

Filter Manufacture

Crystal filters consist of a variety of discrete crystal or monolithic dual elements assembled on a printed circuit board (PCB) with other passive components (inductors, transformers, capacitors etc.), the total unit being hermetically sealed in a metal casing. The elementary engineering steps for filter production are crystal units, printed circuit board (pcb) assembly, filter alignment, encapsulation and final verification. Additionally to crystal filters other customized filters can be produced; (e.g. LC filters,) for creation of these items many non-crystal components for example wound coils are required.
